I was reminded that Juneteenth celebrations officially begin today! :)
For those not familiar with the history of this holiday, Juneteenth marks the day when African American slaves in Galveston, Texas found out in 1865 that they were free. Although these slaves had officially been freed since the beginning of that year, their slave owners "forgot" to deliver the news of their emancipation.
To commemorate this holiday of African American freedom, there are a number of world wide celebrations marking this anniversary. Check out this site.
